Count Wisely | English Story |

 Count Wisely

One day, king Akbar asked a question in his court that left everyone in the courtroom puzzled. As they all tried to figure out the answer, Birbal walked in and asked what the matter was. They repeated the question to him.

The question was, “How many crows are there in the city?”

Birbal immediately smiled and went up to Akbar. He announced the answer; he said there were twenty-one thousand, five hundred and twenty-three crows in the city. When asked how he knew the answer, Birbal replied, “Ask your men to count the number of crows. If there are more, then the relatives of the crows must be visiting them from nearby cities. If there are fewer, then the crows from our city must be visiting their relatives who live outside the city.” Pleased with the answer, Akbar presented Birbal with a ruby and pearl chain.

Moral of the Story

Having an explanation for your answer is just as important as having an answer.

Three Questions

The thought came to a certain King that he would never fail if he knew three things These three things were :

1 What is  the right time to begin something ?

2   Which people  should he listen to ?

3 What is the most important thing for him to do

The king ,therefore , sent messengers throughout his kingdom , promising a large sum of money to anyone who would answer these three questions .

Many wise men came to the came to the king , but they all answered his three questions differently.

In reply to the first question, some said the king must prepare a timetable and the follow it strictly . Only in this way , they said , could he do everything at its proper time . Others said that it was impossible to decide in advance the right time for doing something. The king should notice all that was going on, avoid foolish pleasures, and always do whatever seemed necessary at that time. Yet others said the king needed a council of wise men who would help him act at the proper time . This was impossible  to decide correctly, without help from others , the right time for every action .

But then others said that there were some things which could be urgent . These things could not wait for the decision of the council . In order to decide the right time for doing something , it is necessary to look into the future . And only necessary to look into the future . And only necessary to look into the future . And only magicians could do that . The king , therefore , would have to go to magicians .

In their answers to the second question, some said that the people most necessary to the king were his councilors others said , the priests . A few others chose fighting , and yet others religious worship .

As the answers to his questions were so different , the king was not satisfied and gave no reward . Instead he decided to seek the advice of a certain hermit, who was widely known for his wisdom .

The hermit lived in a wood which he never left . He saw no one but simple people , and so the king put on ordinary cloths . Before he reached the hermits hut the king left his horse with his bodyguard, and went alone.

As the king came near the hermits hut , he saw the hermit digging the ground in front of his hut . He greeted the king and continued digging . The hermit was old and weak , and as he worked , he breathed heavily .

The king went up to the hermit and said , I have come to you , wise hermit , to ask you to answer three questions : How can I learn to do the thing at the right time ? Who are the people I need

most ? And what affaires are the most important ?

The hermit listened to the king , but did not speak . He went on digging . "You are tired," said the king . "Let me take the the spade and work in your place."

"Thanks ," said the hermit , giving the king his spade . Then he sat down  on the ground.

When the king had dug two beds , he stopped and repeated his questions . The hermit gave no answer; but stood up , stretching out his hand for the spade , and said ,"Now you rest ,and let me work ."

But the king did not give him the spade and continued to dig .

One hour passed , then another. The sun went down behind the trees, and at last the king stuck the spade into the ground and said , "I came to you can give me no answer , tell me so and I will return home."

"Here comes someone running ," said the hermit .

It was night. Winter season. Many animals were sleeping in the forest. But few monkeys were jumping from tree to tree as they had no warm house to live in. they were hungry also. they were shouting.

They saw few worms flying form one end to the other. While doing so they were spreading light. The monkeys thought that it is fire.

"Let all of us go towards fire and warm up. The cold is severe."
Monkeys spoke to each other.
Nearby a bird was sitting in a bush.
Hearing what monkeys spoke the bird said:
"Friends ! it is not fire. they were worms.

The monkey didn't like what the bird said, "Who told you ? who asked you to suggest ? you are impertinent "
Thus a monkey said and killed the bird. "Oh ! God ! I did a mistake . I should not have suggested these fools "
thus the bird said and died.

Raman the detective | Tenali Raman Stories

 Raman the detective

Tenali Raman was once walking along a forest path when he was stopped by a merchant. “I’m looking for my camel which has strayed away. Did you see it passing by?” asked the merchant.

“Had the camel hurt its leg?” asked Raman.

“Oh yes! That means you have seen my camel!” said the merchant.

“Only its footprints. See, you can see footprints of an animal with three legs,” said Raman, pointing out the footprints on the ground. “It was dragging the other leg because it was hurt in that leg.”

“Was it blind in one eye?” Raman asked the merchant.

“Yes, yes,” said the merchant eagerly.

“Was it loaded it with wheat on one side and sugar on the other side?” asked Raman.

“Yes, you are right,” said the merchant.

“So you have seen my camel!”  exclaimed the merchant.

Raman looked upset. “Did I say I saw your camel?”

“You have given the exact description of my camel,” said the merchant.

“I saw no camel,” said Raman.

“Do you see those plants lined up on both sides of this path? You can clearly see, some animal has eaten leaves of plants on the left, but the plants on the other side remain untouched. So the animal could see with only one eye.

“Look down. You can see ants lined up on this side which means, the animal was loaded with sugar bag on this side. The bag had a hole, which allowed the sugar to fall off.”

“You can see grains of wheat fallen on the other side. The bag on this side also must have holes in it,” said Raman.

“I can see everything you showed me,” protested the merchant,” but I still don’t see my camel.”

“You follow this trail and soon you will catch up with your animal. After all it is hurt in one leg and you seem to be hale and hearty,” said Raman.

The merchant took his advice and followed the trail left by the camel.

Soon he caught up with the poor animal, limping along.

“Rani!” the merchant shouted in happiness, as he ran to his camel.

The friend got angry.

"What are you talking? How can a vulture lift a boy aged fifteen years? Are you Joking?" the friend asked.

Both entered into a quarrel. Seeking justice they went to court. "How can a vulture carry a boy?" the Justice asked the merchant.

The merchant laughed and said: "Why not? Why not a vulture lift a boy?"

The merchant explained the justice the matter. The people who had gathered laughed at the merchant's friend. He returned the iron beam to the merchant. The merchant in return sent his friend's son back.

A big, heavy branch hit the nest and killed the bird . Fortunately  for the baby birds , the strong wind blew them away to other side of the forest. One of them came down near the cave were the gang  robbers lived. The other landed outside a rishi's ashram a little distance away.

Days passed and  the baby birds became big birds. One day, the king of the country came to the forest to hunt. he saw a deer and rode after it. It ran deep into the forest  followed by the king. Soon the king lost his way and didn't know were he was.

He rode on for a long time till he came to the other side of the forest. Very tired by now , he got off his horse and sat down under the tree that stood near a cave. Suddenly he hard a voice cry out , "Quick! Hurry up! There's someone under the tree. Come and take his jewels and his horse. Hurry , or else he'll slip away. "The king was amazed. He looked up and saw a big, brown bird on the tree under which he was sitting . He also heard faint horse noises issuing from a cave. He quickly got on his horse and rode away as fast as he could.

Soon , he came to a clearing which looked like an ashram. It was the rishi's ashram. The king tied his horse to a tree sat down in it's shade. Suddenly he heard a gentle voice announce, "Welcome to the ashram, Sir. Please go inside and rest. The rishi will come back soon. There's some cold water in the pot. Please make yourself comfortable. "The king looked up and saw a big, brown bird in the tree. He was amazed. 'This one looks like the other bird outside the cave,' he said to himself loudly.

"You are right, Sir," answered the bird. "He is my brother but he has made friends with robbers. He now talks as they do. He doesn't talk to me anymore' Just now rishi entered the ashram.

"Welcome, sir," he said to the king . "Please come inside and make yourself at home. You look tired rest for a while. Then you can share my food"

The king told the rishi the story of two birds and each had behaved so differently though they looked soo alike. The holy man smiled and said," After all, one is known by the company one keeps. That bird has always heard the talk of robbers. He imitates them and talks about robbing people. The one has repeated what he has always heard. He welcomes people to the ashram. Now, come inside and rest. I'll tell you more about this place and these birds"

Children's stories - Rogue Goat

It is a foothills.

Near it was a beautiful river. There was a river running there and the grass grew green mosaic at the foot of the hill.

There were tiny houses in the flat area above the foothills. The people who lived there used to raise sheep, cows and other livestock for their livelihood. They were driving life with the income that came from it.

The sheep they raise will graze on the grass that grows in the foothills. They don’t get there because the cows can’t stand the slope.

There was a rogue goat. The body was velvety, both horns growing and twisting. When the other sheep see it, they are afraid and go away. So arrogance has come to that rogue sheep. If other sheep come near the place where it is grazing, they will be chased away.

one day -

One of the goats that was grazing on the bank of the river saw the crocodile coming by the river and ran away saying that we were scared and escaped. The frightened goat came near the place where the rogue was grazing.

The roaring sheep looked at the running goat and asked angrily, "How can you get to where I am grazing?"

The goat replied, “I saw a crocodile there. So I ran fast. ”

Rogue Auto did not listen to what it said. Began to fight with the goat that ran. That auto spoke peacefully without wanting to put up a fight. Rogue Auto did not listen to what it said. The goat had no choice but to fight the aggressive goat.

While the two goats were fighting on the slope of the mountain, the rogue goat slipped and rolled down the hillside and fell into the river.

The crocodile that had been waiting on the river bank with its mouth parted, grabbed the goat and went into the river.

| Moral Stories for Kids | Tamil Stories for Kids

The Ant and The Grasshopper | Moral Stories for Kids

The Ant and The Grasshopper

Once upon a time, a grasshopper lived in a beautiful garden. On a pleasant summer day, the grasshopper was having a lot of fun. It was hopping about, singing, dancing and playing to its heart’s content when he noticed a line of ants marching along carrying food grains with great toil.

“Where are you going with that heavy load,” the grasshopper asked to one of them. We are taking these seeds to our anthill” squeaked one of the ants.

“It is such a beautiful day, why don’t you come and play with me?” said the grasshopper. "There is food in each and every tree out here. Just eat, relax and have fun instead of toiling this way ”.

“We are helping to store up the food for the winter” replied the ant and "I recommend you to do the same”.

“Why bother about winter now? Winter is still far” said the grasshopper. The Ant ignored him and continued his work. All throughout the summer the grasshopper did nothing but eat, sleep and play.

The weather turned cold. All the food in the garden where the grasshopper lived was covered with a thick blanket of snow. The grasshopper found itself dying of hunger. He saw the ants distributing grains everyday from the stores they had collected in the summer. The Grasshopper realized his foolishness and understood the importance of saving for the future

Mahadharmapal Jataka | Moral story for kids

Mahadharmapal Jataka | Moral story for kids

In ancient time there was a king in Baranasi named Brahmadatta. At that time there was a village in Kasi Kingdom named Dharmapal. A learned Brahman lived in this village. He practiced ten good creeds (Dasa Kusala Dhamma). He was called Dharmapal by the people. His family members and the servants were charitable. They observed precepts (Sila) and fasting vow.

Badhisattva was born in this race as a son of the learned Brahman. He was assumed Dharmapal Kumar. When he came to age, his father sent him to a teacher in Taxila for education. The teacher had five hundred pupils. Gradually Bodhisattva became the best of all among the pupils.

One day the elder son of the teacher died. The teacher, kinsmen, friends and the pupils were crying. Only Dharmapal Kumar, the Bodhisattva did not cry. He laughed.

The teacher wanted to know the reason of his laughing. Then Dharmapal said, nobody died in tender age in his race. To know the genuineness of his words, one day the teacher went to Dhamapal’s house with a bone of dead-goat. The teacher said to his father that Dharmapal died. But Dharmapal’s did not trust. The teacher showed the bone of goat and said, this is the bone of Dharmapal. By no means, the father of Dharmapal trusted it. The teacher acknowledged the truth.

Now the teacher said with joy, ‘Oh Brahmin! Your son is alive. He is my chief disciple. I have come here to give him charge to teach the other pupils. Your son told me that-nobody dies in your race in the young-age. I want to know from you the causes of this. Then the Brahman hearing his words described the causes by which virtues nobody in his race does not die untimely. He said that they were never addicted to bad deed. We give up the bad and always worship the good. So, in our race, nobody dies in young age.

Our mind is pleased before giving. We give with pleasure and respect, we do not after giving repents. So no young man dies. Sraman, Brahman, wayfarer, mendicant, poor, beggar, whoever comes to our house we satisfy them with food and drink. We give them according to our capacity.

‘The husbands are honest and the wives are devoted to their husbands in our race. We follow Brahmacharya in equal virtues. In this race, who is born in the womb of an honest wife, is to be meritorious, pious, wise, well versed in all scriptures and devotions. All members follow the path of virtue hoping to attain heaven after death. The servants also follow the path of virtue.’

Then the Brahman told, ‘He who follows the path of virtue, the virtue (Dharma) protects him. As an umbrella protects man from rain and sun, the Dharma protects also the pious. Never any harm is done to pious. So I say, which bone you have brought belonged to other. It is impossible that my son will die in young-age. Hearing this words, the teacher prayed with joy forgiveness of the Brahman. He said to the Brahman, ‘I brought a goat-bone to you to examine. Your son is well. Now, kindly say to me which Dharma (virtue) you have observed.’

We observe Ariyadharma, Four Noble Truths; Eightfold Paths, Brahmavihara, fasting and five precepts. The teacher returned Taxila after some days. Then he taught Dharmapal Kumar all kinds of education and then sent him to his house with many attendants.

Moral : Dhamma protects him who is pious.
