GENERAL KNOWLEDGE AND YOUR CHILDREN

"Which is the capital of India?" Sneha asked four-year old Rohit, "I don't know, " replied Rohit. "You are too weak in GK. How will you become a topper, then?." sighed Sneha. And she tried to teach little Rohit so many irrelevant information's as GK. Do children need to know about these sort of things?

"No, "says educational specialists. Nowadays, its a fashion that even preschool tots are force-fed a special food - GK. Parents believe that their children will grow up to be toppers only if they are fed with liberal doses of general knowledge. This wrong notion leads many parents to force their children to cram irrelevant facts that they are disinterested in, so that they are seen to be "knowledgeable".

According to child psychologists, preschool tots should be "taught" to learn things around them in a fun way from nature. Children are by nature curious and ask many questions. use these questions as an opportunity to tell them about nature and its wonders.

It helps children to look around inquisitively and ask questions. Don't teach them, but expose them to interesting things that evoke their curiosity. For eg. tell them stories about freedom fighters. In that way they became familiar with the facts about country and its independence struggle.

These slow but steady exercises will benefit your child on a long term basis, and allow his personality to flower. If we try to cram them with questions and answers as if preparing them for quiz programmes, our children will be like caged parrots, capable only of imitation. Do not be in a hurry to make your tot a scholar. Let your child be free to explore and learn about the wonders of the world in a pleasurable way. A child who learns in a stress-free environment absorbs more information, and becomes brighter and smarter.
