Once, a little girl visited Gandhiji. She was surprised to see such a famous man sitting bare-chested, wearing only a dhoti. She wanted to gift him a shirt at once. When she told him her wise, he said, "When I have so many poor brothers and sisters, how can I alone wear a shirt?"
The little girl asked him who his brothers and sisters were. Gandhiji replied, "All the thousands of poor people in our country."
Gandhiji loved the poor people. He thought of all of them as his family. That is why in India, he is called the Father of the Nation.

When we serve others, we should not want 'thanks' from them (though they may thank us). Instead, we could thank them (in our mind) for a chance to serve them. By serving them, we become better people. So, we should serve with joy and humility.
