KINDNESS PAYS

Once upon a time, there were two young men who were neighbors. One was very smart and talented, and quite proud about this. The other was also good, but he had not yet discovered any of his talents. So he felt bad about it. One day, he walked sadly along a river, wondering how to make his life better.

On the way, a withered bush called out to him, “Remove my dead leaves and give me life by watering me.” The young man, being a kind person, cleaned the bush, watered it and walked on. He then came across a starving cow. It too cried out to him for help. He cleaned its shed and brought it a bucket of water and a bundle of hay. Then he walked on.

He came to a hermitage and bowed before the old sage sitting outside. He saw that the hermitage needed cleaning and its roof needed repair. He repaired the roof with thatch, then swept and cleaned the hermitage. He cooked a simple meal for the sage and served him with respect.

As he was leaving, he bowed before the sage who blessed him. The sage told him to take a dip in the river and come back. He did as he was told.

The young man came out of the river after just one dip. He felt different. The sage smiled and told him that his inner talents were all going to blossom very soon. Overjoyed, the young man walked back.
