This is a story about a boy named Vicky. He was in Class IV. He was very careless about his books, pencils, erasers and rulers that immediately after coming home from school, he would throw his bag on the bed and go out with his friends to play. Repeated scoldings from his mother, failed to correct him.
One day after he came home from school, as usual he flung his school bag in his room and went out to play. When he returned and sat down to do his homework, to his surprise he just couldn't find his bag. He wondered where it could have disappeared. He couldn't tell his mother about it because he knew that she would scold him. He felt upset and went out of the house and sat on the verandah, not knowing what to do.
Suddenly, he saw a man calling out to him. Vicky was a bit scared for the man's face was ugly. The man asked Vicky to come along with him to a place from where he could get as many pencils, erasers and rulers. Vicky was tempted by this offer but was reluctant to go. Soon he looked inside his house and found that his mother was busy talking with their next door neighbor, Mrs Fereira. Vicky decided to quietly steal out of the house with the unknown stranger.
The man took Vicky through an unknown road into a house. The house had three rooms. The man accompanied Vicky to the first room. To his surprise, Vicky saw a large heap of pencils. He was so thrilled that he wanted to carry all of them with him. But alas! What was that! The pencils started talking as Vicky was about to pick them up. He heard the pencils echoing together, "You don't deserve to take us home. You don't take good care of us. You sharpen us as you feel like. You scribble with us so much that our points get broken in no time. There are so many poor children in our country who cannot afford to buy us. We have decided to join them."
Vicky was shocked to hear these words. He couldn't believe what he just heard.
The man then took Vicky to the other rooms, one which had big heaps of erasers and the other, rulers. Vicky has a similar experience in the other rooms too. The erasers abused him for rubbing them hard and the rulers blamed him for breaking them too often.
Vicky started screaming loudly and vowed that he would never again treat them so badly.
All of a sudden, Vicky felt that he was falling down from the sky. When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor of his house. His mother had rushed to find out what had happened from the scream he gave. He told her about the strange dream.
His mother then gave him back his school bag which she had hidden in the cupboard in order to teach him a lesson. But after a few days, his mother knew that the best lesson was actually taught to her son by that unusual dream, because ever since then, Vicky started keeping his things in the proper place.
