There was lush green grass on the banks of a lake. a horse came there to graze. He found that the grass was green and soft. The horse enjoyed the tender green grass.
Suddenly, a hungry wolf came to the lake. When he saw the horse, his mouth began to water. Slowly and silently, he crept behind the horse. But the horse smelled the wolf and saw him coming from behind. What could be done now? Escape was impossible. The horse was sure that he was going to die.
But the horse was clever. He did not lose heart. He began to think of ways to save himself from the wolf. Suddenly, he had an idea. He lifted one of his hind legs and started jumping about on three legs.
The wolf came to the horse and asked, "Friend, why are you jumping about on three legs?"
"Dear wolf, a thorn has pierced one of my hind legs. The pain is unbearable. That is why I am jumping about. Can you tell me how to take out the thorn?" said the horse in a sad voice.
The wolf said to himself, "Ah! This is a good opportunity." Thinking thus, he said to the horse, "I will pull out the thorn from your leg. You will not feel any pain. You see, I am an expert at pulling out thorns."
The horse pretended to be happy and said, "Oh really? Then I am sure I will be relieved of this pain soon. Please, dear wolf! Please pull the thorn out immediately."
The wolf went near the hind leg of the horse and sat down to take out the thorn. At once, the horse kicked the wolf. The wolf did not expect this sudden attack. He was taken aback. The horse kicked him so hard, that the poor wolf was flung high up into the air!
The wolf nearly broke all his bones. With great difficulty, he got up and limped into the forest.
The clever horse thus saved his life.
