Garuda was Lord Mahavishnu's mount. He was very strong and proud.
One day, the devas asked to him, "Garuda, a mighty snake called Vasuki lives in Patal. Can you bring him here?"
Garuda laughed and said, "I can even lift huge mountains easily. So, this will be such an easy task for me."
Garuda soon flew to Patal and met Vasuki, "Why have you come here?" Vasuki asked. Garuda explained the purpose of his visit.
Vasuki said, "Then don't waste any time! Lift me up!"
Garuda grasped tightly on the snake's body at its centre, and soared into the sky.
He flew as high as he could, but when he reached the clouds, he saw that half of Vasuki's body was still in Patal!
Garuda couldn't fly anymore, so he returned to Patal to try to lift Vasuki up again, by folding his body up twice. The Garuda soared up to the sky again. But once more, he found that half of Vasuki's body was still lying in Patal, Garuda tried many times to lift Vasuki up, but he failed miserably. Finally, he realised that it was impossible for him to lift Vasuki up. So, he went back to heaven.
The devas told this incident to Lord Shiva, and begged for his help. He extended his finger towards Patal and soon Vasuki called himself around the lord's finger like a ring. Thus, Vasuki came to Devaloka.
