Tenali Ramakrishna was one of the eight great scholars who were in the court of Sri Krishnadeva Raya. he was liked by one and all in the Kingdom. He was talking humorously. People like his jokes.
There were to be discussions on various subjects in the court. There were to be opportunities for deep thinking.
One day Krishnadevaraya placed a matter before the scholars for discussions.
"What is the difference between truth and lie?"
Each one in the court scratched their head and thought over it.
"The meaning of truth is entirely different from that of a lie" one scholoar said.
"It is just like the distance between the sky and the earth" another scholar gave his opinion.
The King was not satisfied by any one of the answers.
Ramakrishna was slient.
"Ramakrishna! Why are you keeping quiet? Let me hear your opinion" the King said.
"Oh! Lord! I don't think the difference is like the distance between the sky and the earth."
The King was anxious to know.
Tenali Rama replied -"Oh! King! the difference between truth and lie is just the distance between the eye and the ear."
"How?"
"What the eyes see is truth. What the ears is lie. Therefore the distance between eye and the ear is the difference between the truth and a lie. Isn't it?"
Krishnadevaraya was pleased to hear the intelectual answer. The audience and the scholars were spell bound.
"Ramakrishna! What you said is correct" the king said and embraced him.
