Tenali is a village in Andrapradesh. There lived a smartha brahmin, Ramakrishna in his maternal uncle's house along with his mother. He had lost his father at his young age. He had no education as vyshnava brahmins were not teaching smartha brahmins. But his mother wanted his son to be educated. She begged few teachers to teach her son. Nobody responded.
Ramakrishna left Tenali to find a teacher in any other place. On the way he saw a saint. The saint asked Ramakrishna who he is?
"Sir, I am an orphan. No body in my place taught me. My mother wants me to be educated. She is much worried about me. I have come in search of a teacher Ramakrishna replied.
The saint felt that Ramakrishna is bold and can achieve his goal.
"My child, to this road end there is a temple. Kali, the goddess is the deity. I shall tell you a hymn. You go there and recite the hymn with deep devotion for there crore times. Kali, mother appears. But you should not fear to see her" said the saint.
"Sir, we are all the children of the mother Kali. Why should we fear?"
"Good, give me your ears. I shall preach you the hymn."
Ramakrishna heard it. The saint blessed him and left.
Ramakrishna went to Kali Temple and stood before the black statue of the goddess Kali. He recited her name with devotion number of times as saint said.
Few days passed. Ramakrishna didn't stop reciting. It was dark night. Suddenly a glorious light appeared. Ramakrishna opened his eyes. The goddess Kali faces. Her shape was fearful. Ramakrishna didn't fear to see her. He laughed loudly.
Kali wondered at his behavior. People used to tremble to see her. But this boy is laughing. What may be the reason?
Kali asked him: " My boy, what is this? You are laughing so loudly. You are so bold. Even the angels fear to see me. Yes, what is the matter?"
Ramakrishna didn't stop laughing. Somehow he stopped and said: "Mother! you are the mother of three words. How can children fear to see their mother?"
"It is alright. But why did you laugh so loudly soon after seeing me?"
"Mother, do not mistake me. You have thousand faces. But you have only two hands. That's why I laughed."
"May be, why did you laugh?"
"Mother, I have only one nose. When I get cold my two hands are not just enough. But you have thousand noses in your thousand faces. Does your two hands are enough if all these noses are attacked by cold?"
Thus said, Ramakrishna again laughed.
Kali also laughed at his joke.
"My child, you are too clever. I bless you with all education. You go to Hampi, the city on the banks of the river Tungabhadra. The city is ruled by the mighty king Sri Krishnadeva Raya. You be the comedian in his court and keep every one laughing. let all of them Praise you."
Thus blessed, Kali disappeared.
Ramakrishna returned home. His mother heard his story. Her joy knew no bounds.
